Federal Government Agencies “Ramping Up” Technology To Stay On Top of New Legislation

What:

Section 508, an amendment to the Workforce Rehabilitation Act of 1973, requires that technology developed or purchased by the Federal government is accessible by people with disabilities. In other words, a person who is mobility impaired or blind must have a way to use a tech product or Web site.

How:

InetSolution, Inc., a Utica, Mich-based company, develops Web technology solutions for organizations seeking to meet Section 508 standards. InetSolution President Jason Sherrill describes the process: “Building and designing a Section 508-compliant Web site is similar to adding sidewalk ramps at your business facility.” Sherrill’s staff of professionals designs the “ramps” for Web sites by including features such as compatibility with text-to-speech software for blind users.

When:

The new legislation became enforceable in June 2001. As of that date, new technology purchased by the Federal government must be Section 508-compliant.
