As more businesses use social media to reach customers, the volume of noise emanating from them on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and similar social media channels has increased exponentially. The evolution is strikingly familiar to what we all experienced when businesses began using email as a marketing tool. Marketers, in their zeal to use the free wonder tool called email, rushed into the game without giving serious consideration to how to best use the medium. I’m seeing that same reckless surge into social media amongst banks and credit unions today. Just as with email, banks and credit unions run the risk of their social media activities becoming noise in their follower’s digital lives and thus completely destroying their ability to effectively use social media to build relationships with customers.
